Mixed Media 101

What is Mixed-Media?

We hear that term tossed around a lot in our circles, but really…what does it mean? Mixed-media is simply the mixing of two or more media elements. For scrapbooking and paper crafting we often throw in a few messier items like pastes, waxes, and gels, because they can add so much dimension, color, and texture on your projects.

Prima has many items which we classify as mixed-media: Color Bloom sprays, Art Philosophy products, and our Finnabair lines which includes Art Basics (Gessos, simpler Pastes, Gels), Art Extravagance (Texture Pastes, Crackle Pastes, Patina Pastes, etc.), Art Alchemy (Paints, Waxes, Sparks, Opal Magic, etc.), and Art Ingredients (mainly items to mix with the pastes and gels like Mica Powder, Glitter, Art Stones, and Glass Beads)

Where Do I Start?

It can be overwhelming! That is why we want to go through mixed-media is smaller bites! Try playing with the Art Basics first…get to understand gessos, gels, and simpler pastes. Next try mixing in mica powder, or glass beads to create custom pastes and gel. Once you feel a bit more confident the door to the mixed-media world will be wide open inviting you to create your own style, and your own techniques!

How can I recreate the projects Prima shows?

We hear this question a lot too. Our design team is pretty advanced, yet all of their projects are re-creatable once you learn about our products and techniques for using them. We are dedicated to helping you out with full tutorials once a week + lots of mixed media videos on our Youtube channel!

We also work side-by-side with Finnabair (as most of our mixed-media products are in her lines with us) to bring you an Art Recipe Challenge each month, gorgeous projects, and videos from her team…like the Art On The Go Youtube Hop happening right now! (See more details on that below!)

Try Finnabair Waxes

1Mixed Media 101 Canvas.jpg

Tanya started with Black Gesso brushed over her piece. Give it a nice covering, then add a touch of texture with Sandable Paste applied over a stencil with one of Finn’s Silicone Brushes. Layer embellishments of your choice, then start to color everything with Finnabair’s waxes! The waxes will color and seal the project, creating this beauty!

"I created this mixed media Canvas with some metal and moulded embellishments, resin frame, melange, chipboard, rope and die-cut leaves. I added some texture to the background of my canvas using the ornate lace stencil and plaster paste, I then prepped it with black gesso. I painted all of my embellishments individually with some black gesso first (I prefer to do it this way thus making sure everything is completely covered). I then placed the embellishments on the canvas and played around with them until I was happy with my composition. I glued them with heavy body gel (this gel is AMAZING and perfect for these types of projects!) I added colour to my canvas featuring two of the new Finnabair metallique waxes, Heather Hills and Blue Lagoon. I then highlighted some of the embellishments on the canvas with Fire Ruby and Vintage Gold." - Tanya

Try Patina Paste

mm 101 vero.jpg

Next up is a gorgeous project by Vero! She used Patina Pastes ( a colored paste with adds a beautiful patina effect) and Rust Pastes (colored pastes with a rusty effect) all over her canvas, then layered glitter on the left side. Next she started her composition with a Memory Hardware wood shutter, adding bits and baubles to build it up.

“Today I took the patina pastes out of the closet; I had forgotten them a little. After creating the composition of the canvas with metal embellishments and resins, I painted the background with the patina and rust pastes in different colors. (I want to paint with color, but add texture too, so Patina Pastes are perfect for this). I have also added glitter to make it brighter. We have a lot of possibilities to paint with all of Finnabair products! “~ Vero Atienza

Try Impasto Paint

mm 101 ksenia.jpg

Ksenia’s project is all about layering to achieve a complicated look filled with texture and visual interest. Start with Aubergine Impasto Paint, then add smudges of Icing Paste in Rose Gold, waxes, and a touch of Unicorn Paste. Next she add shapes created with Modeling Paste and Finnabair’s new moulds.

“I decorated the cover of my notebook. There are so many colors from Finnabair’s paint and pastes, then adding embellishments made from moulds are the best combination. The first step is to cover all with the impasto paint.  Step two - add plaster figurines from our moulds.  Step three is to use icing paste to create texture.  Do not forget about wax to highlight the relief. And I added little bit unicorn paste for magic.” ~ Ksenia
